In 1503, Albrecht Dürer created the famous painting „The Great Piece of Turf“ using a combination of watercolours and drawing techniques. Im Grossen Rasenstueck is a 3D animation created and modelled by Lenné3D and Jan-Walter Schliep.
It is not an attempt to create a digital „copy“ of Dürer’s celebrated work of art but an analytical model representing the creative use of plant species in the masterpiece. Therefore, only plants whose species and position could be clearly identified were depicted. The basis of the model is a quasi-georeferenced plant plan. The digital 3D plants are not visualised as in Dürer’s painting but generated with realistic photo textures and shadows. The film was rendered in Cinema4D.
