Herod’s Third Winter Palace and the adjacent gardens at Jericho were reconstructed in their historical landscape context and visualised using the interactive software Biosphere3D. The aim of the project was to create an intuitive basis for scientific discussions. To achieve this goal, the essential elements of the historical complex were researched and modelled as detailed and accurate as possible.
The virtual reconstruction of historical buildings and the landscape ambience demonstrates the importance of vegetation in the historical context. The fields surrounding the palace were used for agriculture and were of outstanding economic importance. The gardens within the palace complex, on the other hand, demonstrated wealth and prestige. Overall, the vegetation forms a unity with the palace. The 3D plant models are directly related to and clarify the dimensions of the palace buildings.
The project Reconstruction of Herod’s 3rd Winter Palace was funded by the „German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development“ and is part of the project „Modelling, simulating and visualizing complex, realistic landscapes and ecosystems“.
